The Way of Life

‘The way of life is above to the wise.’ Four contrasted ways: The way of the wise – the way of fools. The way of life – the way of death. The way above – the way beneath. The way to heaven – the way to hell.

The way of the wise leads to life and ascends to heaven, where Christ is. Christ Himself is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6), and Scripture reveals Him as the sevenfold Way: The only way to God (Matt. 7:14; John 10:1, 7, 9; 14:6). The way of escape from temptation and sin (1Cor. 10:13). The way into the Most Holy Place, granting access to God (Heb. 9:8-15; 10:19-23). The new and living way, opened through His sacrifice (Heb. 10:20; 5:9). The way of truth, which is given to us by Christ through the gospel and His life (2Pet. 2:2). The right way, contrasted with false paths (2Pet. 2:15). The way of righteousness (2Pet. 2:21; 1Cor. 1:30). In Him, the journey of the wise finds its ultimate destination and purpose.

Whosoever WILL can be saved if he chooses the way of life (John 3:16; 1Tim. 2:4; 2Pet. 3:9; Rev. 22:17). The way of life IS the way to eternal life (John 6:63, 68).

The Way of Life

‘He is in the way of life that keeps instruction: but he that refuses reproof errs.’ The righteous man accumulates knowledge to serve God better, but the wicked refuse correction and instruction. He who heeds advice shall be a companion of the wise (15:31). A rebuke does more good to a wise man than a hundred stripes to a dense or stupid man (17:10) because they hate instruction, and their hearts despise reproof (5:12).

2Timothy 3:16-17 states that all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Those who hate reproof or correction will never be instructed in righteousness, be perfect or thoroughly furnished unto all good works. The Word of God means nothing to them and thus has no purpose or place in their lives.

Three characteristics of the wicked (Isa. 26:10): He will not learn righteousness when favour is given to him. He will deal unjustly with neighbours. He will refuse to recognize God in all His merciful dealings with him.

The Way of Life

‘For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.’ Three things that the truth is: A lamp (119:105). A light (119:105, 130). Reproofs of instruction (2Tim. 3:16-17; Heb. 4:12).

‘The way of life.’ The way of eternal life (John 6:63, 68). No one is forced to obey the law of God, but disobedience results in death. No one is forced to serve God under grace either, but eternal hell is the alternative. Obedience has always been and always will be the condition of salvation and eternal life. No man has the blessing and curse of God – life for obedience and death for sin – at the same time. No man can be saved and unsaved at the same time. The only way one can serve two masters is to serve one at a time, not both together. When sin is committed it brings forth death, not life (Gen. 2:17; Ex. 32:32-33; Ezek. 18:4, 20-24; Matt. 6:24; Rom. 6:16-23; 8:12-13; 1Cor. 6:9-11; Gal. 5:19-21).

God commands men to choose life by choosing His grace and means of eternal life, thus cancelling death and the curses that separate from Him. People can and must choose because God does not force anyone to surrender to Him or remain obedient. All people are free to choose life or death, blessings or curses (Deut. 30:15-20).
