Give Me Thine Heart – Part 3

The book of Proverbs repeatedly teaches that wisdom begins with the condition of the heart. Eighteen commands are given concerning the heart (continues): [9] Do not let the heart be inclined to sin (7:25). Wrong paths usually begin with small compromises. Wisdom continually redirects the heart toward righteousness. [10] Develop an understanding heart (8:5). An understanding heart seeks discernment and desires to know God’s will. [11] Be wise in heart (11:29; 12:23; 16:21). True wisdom is an inward quality that produces gracious speech, prudent decisions, and righteous living. [12] Retain wisdom in the heart (14:33). Wisdom should not merely visit the heart; it should dwell there permanently. [13] Be merry in heart (15:13, 15). A heart resting in God’s goodness experiences joy even amid life’s difficulties. [14] Study answers with the heart (15:28). A wise person thinks carefully before speaking. The heart weighs words before they are spoken. [15] Increase the heart’s knowledge (18:15). The wise never stop learning. They continually seek greater understanding of God’s truth. [16] Apply the heart to instruction (23:12). Correction should be welcomed as God’s means of producing maturity and wisdom. [17] Do not let the heart envy sinners (23:17). The apparent success of the wicked is temporary. The heart should remain content with God’s blessings and trust His justice. [18] Give the heart to wisdom (23:26). This final command brings all the others together. Wisdom requires complete surrender. God does not ask for part of the heart but all of it. When the heart belongs entirely to Him, every other area of life begins to fall into its proper place.

Proverbs 23:26 reveals that the greatest battle in the Christian life is the battle for the heart. God is not primarily seeking outward obedience while the heart remains distant. He desires wholehearted love, trust, and devotion. A surrendered heart naturally produces a transformed life. As the heart is yielded to God’s wisdom, the eyes learn to delight in His ways, the feet walk in His paths, and the whole person grows in righteousness.

When we give God our heart, He directs our path, shapes our character, and leads us into the life of true wisdom.
