Proverbs 23:26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
This verse marks one of the most tender and personal appeals in the book of Proverbs. After warning against sinful companions, immorality, drunkenness, and foolish living, Scripture now pleads with its son to make a wholehearted commitment to wisdom. Rather than demanding mere outward obedience, he asks for the heart, because the heart determines the direction of the entire life.
While Solomon is speaking as a father to his son, his words also reflect the voice of God calling His people to wholehearted devotion. Throughout Proverbs, wisdom is personified as a gracious teacher (especially in Proverbs 8-9), inviting all who will listen to walk in her ways. Ultimately, all true wisdom comes from God, so this appeal points beyond Solomon to the Lord Himself.
God has always desired more than outward religion. He seeks hearts that are fully devoted to Him.
‘Give me thine heart.’ The heart is the centre of a person’s inner life. In Scripture, it represents the mind, the will, the emotions, the conscience, the desires, and the affections.
To “give your heart” means to surrender your entire life, not merely your words or actions, to God’s wisdom and authority. It means loving God above all else, trusting Him completely, submitting to His instruction, delighting in His ways, and allowing Him to advise and warn us in every thought, desire, and decision.
